Disappointing, though not surprising

I found out about this clip from Reappropriate and Angry Asian Man. Go ahead and watch Rosie O’Donnell’s very own “ching chong” moment.

Did you hear the gong at the end of the clip? I’ll continue to be amazed at how this kind of joke will never get old to some people. You can be queer a lesbian and understand homophobia but still be an ignorant racist white person.

Y. Carrington has an interesting analysis that examines the role of orientalism and racism in dominant US culture.

Also, read this open letter that NYC Councilmember John Liu wrote in response to the incident.

  1. Thanks for the link, soft.heart.

I wonder, when was the gong sound added to the clip? Did View’s producers do it, or did YouTube or Gawker? Talk about adding insult to injury.

  2. That’s a good question, which I’m looking in to…

  3. I received a reply from Gawker faster than I thought! It turns out that the “gong” noise was added by Gawker. Here is their reply to my inquiry:

    > Re: Rosie O’Donnell
    >
    > We added the “gong” sound to point out how fucking incredibly racist
    > the bit was. Thanks for reading.
    >
    > Best, etc.,
    > Alex

  4. “To point out how fucking incredibly racist it was?” That’s weird. Most people watching the clip wouldn’t read that context.

For my vantage point, it plays right into the racism—i.e gong=exotic other. Sounds like hipster irony to me.

  5. AGREED. I’m glad you pointed that out.
